When Lui Collins emerged on the folk scene in 1975, her impressive presence and ability to warmly engage with the audience was remarkable for a young performer, and it had a significant impact on her listeners. And as New Hampshire writer and musician Gordon Peery notes, “now, fifty years later, I saw how her gift for filling a room with love and joy—not to mention wit—has only been made even more substantial with the passing of time. Her performance is so heartfelt that it’s easy to miss how professional it is. Uplifting, and remarkable.”
Lui teaches private music lessons on ukulele and clawhammer banjo, as well as music theory lessons, for adults and self-directed children 10 and over. Her innovative approach tailors lessons to meet individual skill levels and interests, from beginners to advanced students: “Rather than learning merely to play the instrument, we are always engaging the ear, with a focus on creating music. What we are learning is music itself; the chosen instrument is simply the medium (very often beloved) upon which we create that music.”
