• Music Theory: Where Art Meets Science – Beg./Int.

  • with Lui Collins

I fell in love with music theory while taking piano lessons as a child. Music feels ethereal and magical, yet it’s grounded in concrete science—the way notes, keys, and chords relate to each other, how vibrations become audible frequencies, and how those connections shape what we hear. As much as I love singing, I love talking theory, and I’d be delighted to share my passion for it with you.

In our class we’ll:

  • Explore the fundamentals: melody, harmony, modes (beyond just major/minor), chord structure, and dissonance/resolution in chord progressions.
  • Dive into rhythm basics: duple/triple/swing meters, the steady pulse imperative.
  • Peek at the “magical” side of theory: the overtone series and the circle of fifths.
  • Apply what we learn on our own instrument.
  • Pause as needed to address any questions.

What to bring: a notebook, your instrument, and any questions you have. Let’s play, experiment, and uncover foundational relationships that make music both scientific and spellbinding.
