In this class we’ll explore a variety of moving songs from roots traditions in the U.S. We’ll enjoy everything from high-energy camp meeting tunes and colonial-era shape note hymns to layered Shaker songs, African-American church songs and meditative lining-out songs that go back to Scotland. We’ll also take the time to see how some of these songs have traveled in and out of secular culture, sometimes being given new life as work songs and movement songs.
