Moran Lee “Dock” Boggs was a stunning banjoist and singer from Norton, VA. He recorded in the late 1920s, and then again in the early 1960s after Mike Seeger sought him out in his hometown. Dock is known for his unique three-finger banjo style and his dark, compelling repertoire. In this class we’ll look at the components of his surprisingly accessible playing, including his well-thought-out, consistent right hand technique, and the left-hand figures he used to such great effect.
