Ballads are story-songs brought over to the American colonies by European immigrants during the 17th-19th centuries, with the tradition continuing up to the present day through the creation of new songs in similar styles. In this workshop, Saro will teach a variety of ballads from southern Appalachian traditions, from medieval songs about faeries and seers to 20th-century songs about coal mining and labor organizing. Saro will teach each song in an accessible sing-and-repeat or “knee-to-knee” style, stopping to discuss and explore the folklore and history of each tale along the way.
